Zombieland: BD Review

I gotta tell you: I'm biased toward Zombieland. I took an extended work trip last year that put me in a car, traversing a good 50% of these lower 48 United States, and at one point I found myself in the glorious town of Nashville, TN. This is a town where my buddy G - a BFF if ever there was one - lives with his amazing wife, and while she was off working one day during my stay, G and I decided that sneaking beers into a movie theatre for a matinee show of something brainless was just about the best idea either of us had ever had. So in a nearly-empty multiplex, G and I sat through Zombieland, quite simply the perfect film for a beer-in-the-middle-of-the-day movie run. Bloody without being overtly gory, stupidly funny but always legitimately so, engaging while not overly taxing on our beer-buzz heads, Zombieland on that fall day was just about the best movie ever, a flick that was loud, bloody, had at least one girl in a tight top and was over before it started (running time: Less than ninety minutes - SCORE!). What's not to like?
I seem to remember there being a story somewhere in there...oh yeah: In a recently post-apocalyptic world, a young dude named Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) crosses paths with Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), as well as Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin) as they all do their best to not be zombie food. Wow - what do you know? That pretty much takes care of the plot! Oh, I'm kidding - there are story arcs of unrequited love, tragic character histories and run-ins with various questionable humanoids (Bill Murray - playing himself - being one of them), but for the most part, Zombieland is a sweet-natured tale of good ol' folks trying to forge relationships with one another while zombie body parts fly all around them. Watching Zombieland on Blu-ray Disc didn't bring this writer the well-worn pleasures of a beer-soaked afternoon at the movies with G in Nashville (very few things do, I must say), but even if repeat viewings of the film have a tendency to diminish the film's overall presence - I liked it a lot more the first time than the second - Zombieland, if anything, is a reliable shoot-em-up, a movie that's smart enough that your girlfriend will probably like it, and blood-soaked enough that you'll let out a couple of good groans. Hey - if it was enough to happily engage G and I..... |
