Star Trek - BD

Nov 8th, 2009
J.J. Abrams' reboot of the classic sci-fi franchise comes to Blu-ray Disc, and DVDFile has an exclusive early review.... Star Trek - BD

J.J. Abrams' revamped, sparkly new Star Trek is a bold reinvention - and somehow, a mammothly popular one - but this writer must confess that while this Paramount Blu-ray Disc edition of the film sets a gold standard for popular mainstream high-definition releases, no movie depressed me more in 2009 than this misfire. I've been a devout adorer of the Star Trek movie pantheon since V'ger came to town in the late 1970s, and even though my relationship with Lost is defiantly love/hate (I look forward to watching every single frame of the last season of the series, but am relatively sure I'll hate it), on the surface, Lost co-creator J.J. Abrams seemed like the perfect modern storyteller to take the Star Trek mythos and deliver it to a new generation, one more familiar with twitters than tribbles.

But for my money, this new work is Star Trek in franchise title alone. It doesn't look like a Star Trek movie, it doesn't have a narrative like a Star Trek movie, its cast is more 90210 than Buck Rogers - yet here lies my conundrum: Even as I type this, I understand that it's exactly these points that made the film such a critical and commercial success. I will admit my love for Star Trek V until I am no longer on this Earth, but there's no way around it: That film - like so many other early Treks bore the crap out of many new viewers. I even tried showing The Wrath of Khan to a buddy's 17-year-old brother, and while he thought the head-worms were cool and gross, for the most part, he shrugged through it.

I guess what I want to say is that the new Star Trek doesn't hearken back at all to the first six Trek pictures, and it saddens me that it appears this is the direct reason that the film was able to find some many new fans.

So yeah - if you have any interest in hearing the rants and raves of a Star Trek (2009) hater, give me a buzz. I love that Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) are sexy, young, strapping lads, but even though I'd consider both of them accomplished actors, their presence in Abrams' Trek lacks any of the gravitas of early ST (and in most cases, the early Trek thespians were acting with plastic backdrops and polyester pantsuits). And I have yet to get acceptable answers as to why Nokia cell phone ringtones and "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys are so universally present in Stardate 2233 times.

At the end of the day, I can say that Star Trek is a professionally-crafted sci-fi action film, but I stand defiant: This is not Star Trek. Some find this to be a long-overdue breath of fresh air; for this card-carrying Trek-nerd, it knocked the wind out of me.

I TOTALLY AGREE
It's very refreshing to finally read a review of this that says "This is not Star Trek". I'd have loved for it to have been, even without the original actors -- I'm not that rigid. But it's just not Trek.
