G-Force - BD

Dec 8th, 2009
Buena Vista / 2009 / 88 Minutes / Rated PG / Street Date: December 15, 2009 G-Force - BD

This G-Force Blu-ray Disc arrived on my desk a few days ago, and I made it about two lines through the synopsis on the back of the edition before I literally exclaimed out loud: "Uh oh." As a fan of all things ridiculous, I'm your guy to come to with a movie like this - point in case: At this time of the year, my Jingle Cats records get pretty heavy rotation - but when G-Force is described by Buena Vista as 'an elite team of highly trained guinea pigs' off to save the world, hopes for filmic worthiness go down.

That being said, however, G-Force is a Jerry Bruckheimer picture, and even when that hard-hitting Hollywood producer swings and misses - G-Force definitely reminded this writer of his Kangaroo Jack debacle - there's something inherently entertaining about the way his films get made. From entities like Armageddon to Coyote Ugly to even things like G-Force, Bruckheimer has an uncanny ability to give his viewers their money's worth even if the film itself is kinda crappy.

And this Babe-esque espionage adventure starring a ragtag team of guinea pigs is crappy, almost to a T. The film's plot is by-the-books - the G-Force gang tries to save humanity; some homo sapien baddies try to stop them - and it is constructed like a modern Disney Channel program, in which music cues from popular (and semi-popular songs) fade in and out, editing is rat-a-tat throughout, and there's an overall cacophony to literally every sequence in the picture. But to hear Nicolas Cage, Jon Favreau and Penelope Cruz (!) offer up their chops in the voice talent area is fun in a star-gazer kind of way, and the film is thankfully short, running less than ninety minutes (including credits).

Yet the Bruckheimer machine cannot be denied: Even if G-Force can't be defended as a narrative whole, if you're forced to watch this flick with your kids or nieces or whomever, I guarantee it won't be that bad of an experience. You'll look back on it as a bad film, to be sure, but plain and simple entertainment is the name of the game when it comes to Jerry Bruckheimer and his films.

Call G-Force crappy...yet somehow watchable.
