Part of the film's widespread appeal lies in its simplicity of style - the movie has one of those high-concept central ideas (guys on a bachelor party weekend in Las Vegas wake up after a night of debauchery and can't remember a thing) that doesn't need much set up and has more than enough potential for funny ha-ha tomfoolery. The film's cast also mixes the normal with the quirky: Sure, on-the-rise star Bradley Cooper shines as the good-looking frontman of the group, and National Treasure's Justin Bartha makes a perfect low-maintenance groom, but both of these guys are countered by Ed Helms' goofy yet lovable nerd character and Zach Galifinakis' seriously out-of-control personal mania.
As a multiplex popcorn movie, it's difficult to imagine The Hangover being much better. Is there anything structurally notable or unique about it? Not really. Does it fully exploit its bachelor-party-gone-wild scenario? Not entirely. But there's an ease and immediacy to the humor and narrative of The Hangover that nevertheless make it a difficult movie to dislike. Grumpy gusses might nitpick over plotholes - of which there are plenty - but this Blu-ray Disc edition of the film (featuring eight more minutes of footage than its theatrical-release, which is also included here) is the kind of high-definition entertainment that pretty much everyone will enjoy. It ain't rocket science or an aesthetically unique piece of film art, but who the Hell cares? The Hangover is as solid a mainstream adult comedy as viewers are likely to find these days. |

The Hangover was the adult blockbuster Hollywood needed this summer. A bawdy, outrageous comedy that does for road movies what There's Something About Mary did for date flick, The Hangover is irresistible fun, a movie that grown-up viewers saw again and again in theatres in droves - worldwide gross $462 million and counting.
