Arguably the greatest stoner comedy currently on the air releases what just might be the most assured TV-on-BD editions of the year...
Warner / 222 Minutes / 2012-2013 / Unrated / Street Date: October 8, 2013
TV is a resourceful place for short-term stoner comedy, and Robot Chicken is one of its best current representatives. Family Guy is still fun, sure, and at the very least the Treehouse of Horror Simpsons episodes continue to deliver the goods, but Robot Chicken may be the most sketch-for-sketch solid place for smartly-presented dumb-ass postmodern comedy.
Basically, the more nuggets of pop culture info you have trapped in your brain’s lint trap, the better these episodes play. Lisbeth Salander from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo doesn’t just get lampooned here – she joins the team of Scooby-Doo to solve a creepy crime (“Zoinks!”). E.T. – yes, that E.T. – pops up multiple times, as well, and there are more than a few zingers aimed at Star Trek, Tales From the Crypt, and even Teletubbies.
The mad scientists behind Robot Chicken: Season Six basically take as many masks and archetypes from popular media of the last thirty years or so and mash them up in inventive and often insane fashions. It doesn’t work every time, but the humor comes at such a rat-a-tat tempo on this TV-on-BD set that it’s hard not to crack a smile every couple minutes or so.
