The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Second Season - DVD

Warner / 528 Minutes / 2012-2013 / Unrated / Street Date: September 10, 2013

This writer was introduced to The Big Bang Theory by my cousins in Seattle a few years ago, and ever since, following this nerdtastic series has remained one of the more fulfilling sitcom experiences I've had in a long while. I've had only marginal love for How I Met Your MotherTwo and a Half Men, or the other handful of legitimately laugh-tracked sitcoms still on the air, but somehow the geeky charms of BBT have made a believer out of me.

For those unfamiliar with TV’s favorite dweebs, The Big Bang Theory follows four genius science types - Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) and Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar) - as they find new and inventive ways to be completely socially inept, especially toward members of the opposite sex. Speaking of which, the ladies on this Complete Sixth Season set shine brighter than ever: Penny (Kaley Cuoco), Bernadette (Melissa Rauch), and Amy (Mayim Bialik) all stand up wonderfully alongside their Trek-obsessed castmates.

The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Sixth Season won't change the course of television, nor will it provide any sort of unique illumination on the public at large, but it does what every show on TV hopes to do: it can be funny - really funny. Is this latest compilation the show’s grandest hour? I doubt it. But this is a show with creators and actors broadcasting confident, nuanced comedy in fresh and appealing ways. And it allows both geeks a chance to laugh out loud at the lunacy of their worlds, which always provides a welcome release.
