"I can't believe two cows made the ultimate sacrifice so you guys could watch TV with your feet up." "Well, they were chair-shaped cows. They never would have survived in the wild...."
Warner / 544 Minutes / 1995-1996 / Unrated / Street Date: April 30, 2013
Before they were making a cool million per episode, it was just Monica, Ross, Phoebe, Chandler, Rachel and Joey, starring sorta-star Courtney Cox and five other "who-are-they again?" newcomers. But while the faces may not have been familiar, from the very first episode Friends was a smash hit and NBC's instant Thursday-night anchor. And with season one such a success, there were pretty big expectations for season two, so the producers wasted no time in shaking things up. Known as the year when "Ross and Rachel finally got together", the show's dynamics changed for the better and the chemistry was still there. At least, that's what millions of fans thought every time they tuned in on Thursday nights, and a verifiable institution was born.
To be honest, season two has never been my favorite. While the characters and situations remained inspired and the cast tried their damnedest with even the lamest one-liners, the jokes often fell flat. Every episode contained more than a few clunkers, and am I the only one less-than-enamored with all that "Smelly Cat" stuff? But the Rachel and Ross romance did inject plenty of life in what could have quickly become a stale premise, and there are still enough laughs for three other, lesser sitcoms put together. Even better, the hit status of the show attracted scores of great guest stars, including Jean-Claude Van Damme, Brooke Shields, Julia Roberts, and in a popular recurring role, Magnum P.I. himself, Tom Selleck. I don't think the show found its groove yet by this point, but it's still some pretty classic TV.
Episodes included: Ross's New Girlfriend, The Breast Milk, Heckles Dies, Phoebe's Husband, Five Steaks and an Eggplant, Baby on the Bus, Ross Finds Out, The list, Phoebe's Dad, Russ, Lesbian Wedding, After the Super Bowl, The Prom Video, Ross and Rachel...You Know, Joey Moves out, Eddie Moves In, Dr. Ramoray Dies, The One Where Eddie Won't Go, The One Where Old Yeller Dies, The One With the Bullies, The One With the Two Parties, The One With the Chicken Pox, and The One With Barry and Mindy's Wedding.
