Video: How Does the Disc Look?

The 1.85:1 1080p transfer on Chasing Mavericks’ Blu-ray release is the best thing it has going for it. As I mentioned before, the movie’s surfing scenes are its high water marks, and on this beautiful transfer, they pop right off the screen. Detail quality is sharp and distinct, color accuracy appears natural and punchy, and black levels are perfectly consistent throughout. Compression artifacting and aliasing/banding are also kept to a minimum. Very nice, indeed.

Audio: How Does the Disc Sound?

This is perhaps a little bossy as a lossless track, but the DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio mix on this disc is pretty darned capable as a whole. Dialogue is audible throughout, and while music cues often bully out other elements when they kick in, there’s no question that the movie has an immersive, engaging presence when surrounds kick in. This mix totally gets the job done, though it’s not exactly the most elegant track to hit the format in recent months.

Spanish and French Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks are included, as are English SDH, French, and Spanish subtitles.
