Video: How Does The Disc Look?
There is controversy about which aspect ratio On the Waterfront was originally shot in, but Criterion has made said issue win/win: they've included both 1.66:1 and 1.33:1 1080p transfers that are absolute knockouts. Contrast is absolutely astonishing in its clarity, and detail quality is sharp in every shot. Grain is also handled excellently, with the movie appearing with a lived-in glow that serves it well. The transfer print utilized is sensationally clean, to boot. Another Criterion knockout.

Audio: How Does the Disc Sound?
We also get both LPCM mono and DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound mixes, and while the mono track seems more fitting to the picture, each track totally works. Dialogue is as clean as one could expect, the film's music has a full, lush feel to it, and effects and atmospherics (however minimal they might be) come through with lovely clarity.
English SDH subtitles are included.
