Video: How Does the Disc Look?

That Mihai Malaimare, Jr.’s cinematography in The Master wasn’t recognized by the Oscars is a sin against nature: the 65mm imagery on hand here is extraordinary, and this 1.85:1 1080p transfer captures it with delirious beauty. Grain handling is excellent, with the movie coming across with a kind of timeless glow, and black levels are rock-solid from start to finish. Color accuracy seems authentic as well, and detail is often stunning in its innate clarity. Compression artifacting isn’t an issue, either, which pretty much leaves this presentation in pristine shape.

Audio: How Does the Disc Sound?

The DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound mix included here is also a knockout. Jonny Greenwood’s superb musical score (also ignored by the Academy) is its most resonant and effective element, but dialogue is always audible and crisp, and atmospherics slip into surround channels with wonderful effect. Dynamic range is panoramic, as well, with both high- and low-ends coming through beautifully. Wonderful.

English SDH and Spanish subtitles are included.
