Video: How Does the Disc Look?
This is one of the great video presentations of the year, however. Criterion has remastered Heaven's Gate with exceptional quality on this 2.40:1 1080p transfer, and the results are hypnotic. Detail accuracy is superb, with textures literally popping right off the screen, color quality is steady and well-balanced, and grain is handled excellently, with the movie coming across with a rapturous film-like glow. The transfer print utilized is free of dirt and grime, as well, and black levels are consistent from top to bottom. Sensational.
Audio: How Does the Disc Sound?
Heaven's Gate has also been opened up to a new DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound mix that sounds wonderful in high-def. The movie's meandering score is especially notable, utilizing high and low ends of this track's expansive dynamic range to superb effect. Dialogue is always audible, atmospherics are lived-in and assured - one can't imagine the flick sounding all that much more pristine than this.
