Video: How Does The Disc Look?

There are those who might bemoan facets of the 1.78:1 1080p transfer given The Avengers on Blu-ray - not enough contrast, overly dark - but my vote is that this presentation captures the movie's visual style perfectly. When I saw the film in cinemas in June, it seemed aggressively shadowy and moody, and that's replicated here to a T. Detail quality is exceptional, with textures big and small appearing natural and punchy, and the movie's color palette comes across with vivid definition, allowing both flesh tones and deeper, more saturated hues to feel authentic and appropriate. Compression artifacting isn't an issue, banding is kept out of sight - not too shabby at all.

Audio: How Does the Disc Sound?

There's no hesitation with this DTS-HD 7.1 Master Audio sound mix, though - it's a knockout. Whedon and team threw a lot of bells and whistles into The Avengers' overall sound design, and each of these elements appear on this lossless mix amazingly. The film's sweeping musical score has striking, unbelievably fidelity to it, and effects and atmospherics literally bombard viewers with sharp, perfectly-timed clarity. Dialogue is also audible throughout. All in all, a swirling, panoramic feast for the ears - and everything the movie's mix could want to be.

French DTS-HD 7.1 Master Audio and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 mixes are included, as are English SDH, French, and Spanish subtitles.
