MacGruber: BD Review

Sep 8th, 2010

Universal / 95 Minutes / 2010 / Unrated / Street Date: September 7, 2010

This is the hardest review I have ever written.  If I were a 14 year old girl, this would simply be a diary entry about the boy I liked that no one would ever read.  Unfortunately, secret diary entries do not get me more DVDs to review.

I didn’t hate MacGruber. There, I said it.  Don’t judge me.  Okay fine, judge me, but trust me when I say that this movie will gain cult classic status in 10 years.

While I did like it, I feel this raises so many questions about me.  Why does a 30 year old man still laugh at a movie made for 14 year olds?  Why do I torture myself with these awful movies?  And most importantly, why do so many of my thoughts start with ‘If I were a 14 year old girl'?

I really wanted to hate MacGruber.  It really isn’t good, but I found myself laughing quite a bit throughout the movie.  Now, as you cannot wash off that kind of shame, I feel dirty.  I feel like the girl at the bar who gets drunk, has a one night stand and has to do the walk of shame the next morning.  Sure, I had a great evening, but I’ve lost a lot of self respect this morning.

Will Forte stars as MacGruber, a MacGyver spoof that started as a sketch on Saturday Night Live.  He, along with Kristen Wiig and Ryan Phillipe, attempt to foil a plot to destroy Washington DC set up by Val Kilmer.  The movie is so absurd, and the dialog so ridiculous, that I couldn’t help but laugh.  Also starring in this film are a number of professional wrestlers from the WWE.  I’m not going to lie - as a huge WWE fan, that certainly increased my enjoyment of the film. Chris Jericho, Kane, Mark Henry, The Big Show, M.V.P. and The Great Khali spend roughly 5 minutes on screen, but it was so worth it.

There are a number of great debates regarding Saturday Night Live: Best cast, best host/musical group combination, best Weekend Update team.  For my money, I’ll take the Mike Meyers/Adam Sandler cast, the Chris Farley/Mighty Mighty Bosstones episode from 10/25/1997, and while I love Kevin Nealon, Norm MacDonald, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, nothing tops Tina Fey and Amy Poehler for Weekend Update.

The one thing that is not debatable is where this ranks on the list of the best SNL based movies…it is right at the bottom.  I won’t even try to defend it, since there is no defense that will make anyone believe me.

My editor is reading this and shaking his head right now.  I have a feeling this is a low point in our relationship. [Editor's Note: No comment.]
