Supernatural - The Complete Fifth Season: BD Review

Sep 8th, 2010

Warner / 924 Minutes / 2009-2010 / Unrated / Street Date: September 7, 2010

The bulk of what you need to know about Supernatural you learn in the first 90 seconds of the first disc of the show's first season: Two ridiculously hot guys have a knack for stabbing, shooting, and otherwise beating to a bloody pulp a concatenation of ghosts, demons, spirits, various and sundry otherworldly beasts, all to the strains of AC/DC’s "You Shook Me (All Night Long)".

And on this Complete Fifth Season set, the dreamboat dudes are given their most intense complications yet - namely, the end of the world. Yes, as season five kicks off, Lucifer himself shows up on Earth and the apocalypse appears near. Thank goodness the Supernatural boys are up to the challenge. We have angels and archangels, demons and killers, powers of light and dark that are seriously tough cookies to deal with - thankfully Supernatural's writers and producers aren't scared of a good fight (and some heavy bloodshed).

Obviously with a name like Supernatural, this is not a show about the mundane; but there are tons of shows about vampires and demons and psychics. This one is special for a couple of reasons. For one thing, they really do their research. I’m constantly surprised at the variety of mythologies and religions from which they pull their creatures.

What’s more, they really drill down to the core of honest emotions and issues: The fine line between loving and loathing one’s family, the nature of brotherhood, of partnership, of dealing with loss and the desire for vengeance, of what it means to be a hero, and learning how to grow up and be a man.
