Supplements: What Goodies Are There?

Made in U.S.A. showcases a number of featurettes: We get interviews with actors Anna Karina and Laszlo Szabo, as well as two 'video essays' - one on the cultural Godard-isms in the film and another that focuses on the hyper-frequent references in the film to other movies and concepts. Also included are two trailers.

2 or 3 Things I Know About Her also has some featurettes - an interview with theatre director and Godard colleague Antoine Bourseiller, old discussions with actress Marina Vlady and another with Godard himself, as well as another piece looking at the film's references (a la Made in U.S.A.'s). This edition also has a screen-specific audio commentary with scholar Adrian Martin that definitely helped a Godard novice like myself weather the storm of the movie's labyrinthine syntax. The film's trailer is also included.

Final Thoughts

These are DVD releases for those already inducted into the Godard fan universe, but those select few will salivate: Both Made in U.S.A. and 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her are given excellent Criterion treatments, with glorious transfers, appropriate mixes, and a handful of goodies on each one to help round things out. Those not versed in Godard might find their 'artiness' a bit off-putting, though, so proceed carefully.
