--
HOLLYWOOD, CA -- Paramount Home Entertainment brings three classic
John Wayne titles to DVD for the first time on June 5. Starring Wayne
as a cowboy, an ex-Navy man and a rancher, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE,
DONOVAN'S REEF and THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER join TRUE GRIT and EL DORADO
as classic John Wayne movies from the 1960's that have become newly available
on DVD for the first time. Prebook for all three DVDs is April 24.
Directed by John Ford (The Grapes of Wrath), THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY
VALANCE (1962) stars Jimmy Stewart as Ransom Stoddard, a three-term
senator and former governor who returns to the little western town of
Shinbone to attend the funeral of an old friend. Famous for killing the
notorious outlaw Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin), Stoddard's return to Shinbone
sparks interest among the local press and soon leads to his reminiscences
of how he first came to the small town and why he feels indebted to the
late Mr. Tom Doniphon, played by John Wayne. Also starring Vera Miles
(Psycho) as the love interest of Stoddard and Doniphon, THE MAN WHO SHOT
LIBERTY VALANCE depicts the Wild West and the legend behind it.
Producer-director John Ford (Wagonmaster) once again brings us a classic
John Wayne comedy with DONOVAN'S REEF (1963). Starring John Wayne
and Lee Marvin as two ex-Navy buddies, Michael Patrick 'Guns' Donovan
(Wayne) and Thomas Aloysius 'Boats' Gilhooley (Marvin), DONOVAN'S REEF
follows the pals as they spend their days boozing at the local South Pacific
saloon. Brawling and feuding in the monotony of tropical living, "Guns"
and "Boats" are interrupted by the arrival of Ameilia Sarah
Dedham, (Elizabeth Allen, Diamond Head) a snotty Boston girl who arrives
on the tiny island in search of her missing father, Dr. William Dedham
(Jack Warden, While You Were Sleeping). While Ameilia tries to claim her
father's share of the family shipping business, she finds herself distracted
by the charming 'Gunsä and the freewheeling status quo between the boys
is suddenly disrupted.
In THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER (1965), John Wayne stars as John Elder,
the eldest rancher and gunslinging brother of gambler Tom (Dean Martin),
failed businessman Matt (Earl Holliman, Summer and Smoke), and college
student Bud (Michael Anderson, Jr., The Glory Guys). Gathering for the
funeral of their mother Katie, the brothers make a pact to avenge their
mother's death and make the Elder name respectable once again. Yet, as
they meet resistance from some of the locals, John and his brothers must
fight off the town bullies. Directed by Harry Hathaway (True Grit), THE
SONS OF KATIE ELDER is the epic story of a woman's maternal influence
on her brood.
The DVDs of THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, DONOVAN'S REEF and THE
SONS OF KATIE ELDER are presented in widescreen format enhanced for 16:9
televisions and include their original theatrical trailers. THE MAN WHO
SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE is in Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround and French
Mono, while DONOVAN'S REEF and THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER are in Dolby Digital
English and French Mono. All three DVDs are closed-captioned and subtitled
in English for the deaf and hard of hearing and are encoded with the Macrovision
AntiCopy process.
