announced the release of the critically acclaimed film Before Night Falls.
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2000 Venice Film Festival, and starring
Best Actor Academy Award nominee Javier Bardem, Before Nights Falls will
be available for rental on VHS and DVD, and for sale on DVD for $24.98
on May 22.
Before Night Falls is a richly imagined journey into the
life and writings of the brilliant Cuban author and exile Reinaldo Arenas.
The film spans the whole of Arenas' life, from his rural childhood and
early embrace of the Revolution to the persecution he would later experience
as a writer and homosexual in Castro's Cuba. The film follows his departure
from Cuba in the Mariel Harbor exodus of 1980 to his exile and death in
the United States. Directed and co-written by Julian Schnabel (Basquiat),
Before Night Falls is a portrait of a man whose search for freedom - artistic,
political, sexual - defied poverty, censorship, persecution, exile and
death.
The Before Night Falls DVD features the widescreen version
of the film, 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio, 2.0 stereo surround sound, 5.1 Spanish
Audio, English, Spanish and French subtitles and a feature-length commentary
with Director Julian Schnabel, Actor Javier Bardem, Screenwriter Lázaro
Gómez-Carriles, Composer Carter Burwell, and Co-Director of Photography
Xavier Pérez Grobet. The DVD includes three documentary shorts,
Excerpts from "Improper Conduct," a 1983 interview with Reinaldo
Arenas, Behind the Scenes, a home movie by Lola Schnabel, and Little Notes
on Painting, that features Julian Schnabel presenting some of his famous
artwork. Also included on the DVD are the theatrical trailer, animated
menus, and cast and crew filmographies. The DVD-Rom content includes a
link to the original website.
The film stars Javier Bardem (Live Flesh, Mouth to Mouth),
one of Spain's most decorated actors. For his work in Before Night Falls,
Bardem was awarded Best Actor by the Venice Film Festival, the National
Society of Film Critics, the Southeastern Film Critics and the National
Board of Review. He was named runner-up by the Boston Film Critics, nominated
for a Golden Globe for Best Actor, nominated as Best Actor by the Chicago
Film Critics and nominated for Best Actor for the IFP Spirit Awards. The
film also features Olivier Martinez (Soleil, The Horseman on the Roof)
and Johnny Depp (Chocolat, upcoming in Blow).
