Tyrell:
Commerce is our goal here at Tyrell. More human than human is
our motto. Rachael is an experiment, nothing more. We began to
recognize in them a strange obsession. After all, they are emotionally
inexperienced with only a few years in which to store up the experiences
which you and I take for granted. If we gift them with a past,
we create a cushion or pillow for their emotions and consequently
we can control them better.
Deckard: Memories. You're talking about memories
- from the film Blade Runner
After spending last week musing about memories of original theatrical
releases, this little quote from Blade Runner - the monumental
Science Fiction Ridley Scott opus - seemed especially right. It
also fit since there's something to remember about that movie
this year: It's been an even twenty years since its original theatrical
release.
We all know what this kind of anniversary generally means to
this kind of film. That's right. Usually we're looking at a huge
re-release - multiple cuts of the same film on one DVD, seemless
branching with deleted scenes, the kinds of superfluous extras
that make you ask, "Why the hell did they DO that?"
- all in the hopes to drain you and me of around $30.
Now the rumor mills amongst dvd-ish circles were rife with info
about plans for the Blade Runner anniversary edition. There was
even briefly a wild tidbit about a theatrical release in honor
of the big twenty passing by this film. But suddenly all the plans
are poof...revealing what we can only speculate might be a
slight "disagreement" involving players who have the
power to say yes or no to the film's appearance on a new
DVD.
This is an open plea to those who might be in the middle of some
sturm und drang about issues that will seem very, very petty years
from now - or even as this year comes to a close. In this
very small town of Los Angeles, every story eventually gets told
between the dailies, weeklies and monthlies...and even with
the help of internet reporting a la dvdfile.com and other sites.
It would be a drag to taint this great achievement with typical
Hollywood ya-ya. And such things can have lasting impacts on the
entertainment and events they surround. Just ask the great sport
of baseball how long it's taken to recover from its last
strike.
So, I'm just going to say what was said to the baseball
team owners and the players when they were close to yet another
strike in late August this year: Work it out. Please. Fans really
do remember.
Karen Idelson promises to spend next week trying to forget.
