At the opening night party of his college play in 1972, Richard Collier is approached by an elderly woman he's never seen before. In the dead silence of the room, she hands him a small memento and whispers "Come back to me." Just as suddenly as the mysterious woman had appeared, she vanishes into the shadows. Left with only the memory and the item she gave to him, an old pocket watch, Richard returns to his normal life. Flash forward eight years later, and Richard has left behind the events of that fateful night, and departs his home in Chicago in order to finish his newest play..

After checking into The Grand Hotel, Richard's haunted past is stirred again after he sees - and immediately falls in love with - the image of a beautiful woman on the wall of the hotel's history room. After researching the woman's past he is startled to discover that this was in fact the woman who had come to visit him eight years earlier. As his interest verges on obsession, Richard begins exploring the possibilities, and embarks on a romantic journey Somewhere In Time...

The DVD

Originally released by Universal on DVD in 1998, the initial release of Somewhere In Time featured little more than just the film. But in the past two years, members of INSITE, the devoted fan club of Somewhere In Time enthusiasts, wrote, emailed and faxed Universal demanding a special edition of the film. Answering fans pleas, Universal released the Somewhere In Time Collector's Edition on October 24, complete with an all-new making-of documentary, audio commentary with Director Jeannot Szwarc, and an additional featurette on the INSITE fan club. (For a more in-depth look at the disc, read our full-length review.)

About Jeannot Szwarc

Born and raised in Paris, France, Szwarc first came to recognition with American audiences with his early television work, directing such series as Kojak, Night Gallery and Columbia. Szwarc then went on to a prolific career in the 70s and 80s, directing such big-budget vehicles Jaws 2, Supergirl, Enigma and Santa Claus The Movie. Then the 90s and up to today, Szwarc directed some films in his native France, and returned to American, television, directing some of the biggest series on television, including The Practice, Providence and The Twilight Zone.

But perhaps Szwarc's most beloved and revered work remains Somewhere In Time. Though initially a box office disappointment, the film quickly became a "cult" favorite, and has built up one of the most amazing and passionate fan followings in history. The International Network of Somewhere In Time Enthusiasts, better known as INSITE, stage frequent trips to the glorious grand hotel that served as a key location in the film, published a quarterly fan magazine, and most notably have raised over $7,000 for spinal cord research and funded Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour's stars on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

To celebrate the new special edition DVD release of Somewhere In Time and INSITE, DVDFILE had the opportunity to chat with Szwarc on the film, his career, and the DVD...
