Fade in on the Hunter-Grazer, a military ship carrying a variety of cargo and a motley crew and passengers. In hypersleep are Fry, the second-class pilot, Johns, officer in the Marine Military Police (and nursing one itchy trigger finger) and Riddick, a transport from the penal colony and the most feared criminal in the galaxy. When they crash on a seemingly-deserted, desolate planet with three orbiting suns, the threat of darkness is the last thing they think they have to worry about. But they soon discover they are not alone...with the planet's suns setting, an entire culture of terrifying, bloodthirsty and remorseless creatures emerge from the depths, and our band of anti-heroes must wage a terrifying battle for survival...

A hit when first released in the winter of 2000, Pitch Black is one of the few modern thrillers that is able to affectionately hark back to the sci-fi/horror classics of the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's, like ALIEN, The Thing and Forbidden Planet, yet still bring fresh elements and genuine suspense to the mix. Boasting a unique, arresting visual style and thrill-a-minute pace, along with Twohy's first film, The Arrival, the success of Pitch Black has helped make him one of the most respected filmmakers working in the genre today.

The DVD

Released on October 24 by Universal Home Video, Pitch Black is available in two separate versions, R-Rated and Unrated. But unlike most such releases, the unrated version of Pitch Black doesn't boast extra gore or sexuality; rather, it expands the characters and some early scenes, bring an added depth sacrificed for running time in the original theatrical version. Also boasting two screen-specific audio commentaries with Twohy, his cast and the special effects team and a making-of featurette, Pitch Black is a visually and sonically arresting DVD.

To celebrate the DVD release, we were able to chat with Mr. Twohy about the film, the DVD and his interest in sci-fi and horror filmmaking. Personable, engaging and with a wry sense of humor, Twohy (often patiently!) answered our Ten Questions...
