In the history of contentious, bloody battles, a few
notable deathmatches stand out. God and the Devil. The
American Civil War. Bush versus Gore. Britney Spears
and Christina Aguilera trying to out lip-synch each
other at the Grammy Awards. With so many juice catfights
to choose from, it would seem to be a pretty impossible
task to pick out just one that stands head and shoulders
above the rest, wouldn't it? But in the annuals of historic
face-offs, perhaps none has been as heated, controversial
and just plain emotional as the one between Dolby
Digital and DTS.
Oh, alright, so maybe the battle of the
dueling surround sound formats isn't exactly that
bad. But the digital equivalent of Celebrity Deathmatch,
no single debate in DVD-land instantly provokes a reaction
faster than the question "So, what do you like
better, DTS or Dolby Digital?" But about a month
ago, the contest got even more exciting, with
the limited release to the press by Dolby Labs of a
brief document assessing the sonic quality of DTS. Needless
to say, the results were none-too-laudatory. But just
like that little stomach creature from ALIEN, over the
next several weeks DTS laid dormant, carefully drafting
their rebuttal to Dolby's claims...
In the effort of fairness, and just to
show we're committed to helping further the apocalypse,
we now present in their entirety these two highly-controversial
documents. But in the interest of fairness, we're not
going to weigh in on these two little documents just
yet, instead letting you pore over them for yourself
and come to your own conclusion. But no doubt, the fun
is only beginning...
