Where No Discs Have Gone Before

BCI has announced plans to release a Sonny Chiba Double Feature on Blu-ray Disc on 8 January. Both Killing Machine and Shogun’s Ninja are coming to high-def in this release, which will feature 1080p transfers of both films, and both English and Japanese mono sound mixes (no bonus features will be included). SRP is $22.98.

















Looking for the perfect holiday gift for your high-def-loving teenage cousin? Look no farther than Mantra’s 11 December release of Girls Gone Wild: Sexiest Moments Ever 2 on both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD. This oh-so-noble collection of drunk chicks flashing the camera will arrive on both formats in 1080p along with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 sound mixes. SRP for each title is $24.95.


Disney has announced final specs for their 5 February DVD release of the animated classic The Aristocats. This adorable feline romp will arrive on this new special edition release with a new anamorphic transfer (the first time in widescreen on DVD), an upgraded Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix, a handful of making-of featurettes, a Disney Song Selection feature, as well as a deleted song. SRP is $29.99.





Season 1 on HD DVD/standard DVD combo has just been released, but Paramount has announced that Star Trek: Season 2 will be headed to HD DVD on 25 March. No firm specs have been made available – look for the video transfers to mirror the 1.33:1 1080p presentations of season one – but bonus features will most probably include more home movie footage shot by Billy Blackburn, as well as other goodies. SRP is $194.99.








Tai Seng is preparing a Blu-ray Disc release of the hit Asian film Initial D on 22 January. Based on the hit series and directed by Andrew Lau, this actioner will arrive on high-def with a 1080p transfer (sound mix specs and the release’s bonus features slate have yet to be released). We’ll keep you updated as more info comes in. SRP is $34.98.















Phoenix Entertainment is preparing an HD DVD release of The Lawless on 5 February. This grisly tale of drugs, guns and double-crossings starring Denton Blane Everett and Jason Riley Hoss will be offered at a super-inexpensive list price of $19.99. We don’t know exact tech specs or bonus features as of yet; stay tuned…















12 February will bring the HD DVD release of the critically acclaimed Into the Wild from Paramount. Directed by Sean Penn and featuring a star-making performance from Emile Hirsch, this man-versus-nature saga will arrive on high-def with a 2.35:1 1080p widescreen transfer, a Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 sound mix (sadly no lossless option), two featurettes and the film’s theatrical trailer. SRP is $39.98.














Sony has announced a 29 January release of the Ryan Reynolds drama The Nines. Directed by John August and also starring Hope Davis, this mind-trip of a movie will arrive on DVD with an anamorphic widescreen transfer, a Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix, a pair of commentary tracks (participants TBD), some deleted scenes, two featurettes, a blooper reel, some storyboard-to-screen comparisons and a stills gallery. SRP is $24.96.






The Reese Witherspoon/Jake Gylenhaal drama Rendition didn’t find much of an audience in theatres this fall, but New Line hopes it will broaden its appeal on DVD when it’s released on 19 February. Rendition will come to DVD with an anamorphic widescreen transfer, a Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix, a commentary track (participants TBD), two featurettes and a handful of deleted scenes. SRP is $28.98.














The latest installment of the ultra-groady and ultra-successful Saw franchise is coming to DVD: Lionsgate is preparing a 22 January release of Saw IV. Starring Tobin Bell, Scott Patterson and Betsy Russell, this gore-fest will arrive on DVD in both rated and unrated versions with an anamorphic widescreen transfer and a Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix as well as some bonus features (rumored to be a commentary track, as well as some featurettes). We’ll let you know when final specs get released. SRP is $29.95.












New Line has announced plans to release Blade: The Complete Series on 12 February. This show, based on the hit Wesley Snipes franchise and starring Sticky Fingaz and Jill Wagner will come to DVD in a 4-DVD set with extended versions of most episodes (that were ‘too graphic for TV’), some commentaries, and a making-of featurette. SRP is $39.98.














Final specs have been announced for Sony’s 8 January Blu-ray Disc release of Dragon Wars. The hit sci-fi film will arrive on high-def with a 2.40:1 1080p transfer, a lossless-quality Dolby TrueHD 5.1 sound mix, a making-of featurette, a storyboard-to-screen comparison and a stills gallery. SRP is $38.95.















Final specs have been made available for Buena Vista’s 22 January Blu-ray Disc release of The Game Plan starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. This tough-guy-turned-proud-papa comedy will arrive on high-def with a 2.35:1 1080p transfer, an uncompressed (lossless) Dolby 5.1 sound mix, a blooper reel, some deleted scenes, a pair of featurettes, and a Blu-ray Disc exclusive Chalk Talk interactive commentary with Johnson and the film’s director. SRP is $34.98.












MPI is preparing a 26 February release for Family Affair: Season Five. This final season of the beloved Brian Keith sitcom will arrive on DVD in its original full-frame format with mono sound mixes. No bonus features have been announced for this release. SRP is $29.99.
















Final specs have been made available for the 5 February Blu-ray Disc release of Wall Street from Fox. This Oscar-winning tale of greed and money starring Charlie Sheen and Michael Sheen will arrive on high-def with a 2.35:1 1080p transfer, a DTS-HD Master Lossless sound mix, a commentary with director Oliver Stone, a making-of featurette and a handful of deleted scenes. SRP is $39.98.














Following its popular broadcast on NBC a few months ago, Universal has announced plans to release Saturday Night Live Lost & Found: SNL in the 80s on 4 March. This look at the iconic show in the me decade will arrive on DVD with an anamorphic widescreen transfer and a stereo sound mix (no bonuses will be included). SRP is $19.98.






Sony has announced a 29 January release of Groundhog Day: 15th Anniversary Edition. This critically- and publicly-adored comedy starring Bill Murray as a newscaster who is doomed to repeat the same day over and over will get a new anamorphic transfer and a Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mix on this new edition, as well as a commentary track with director Harold Ramis, three featurettes and a handful of deleted scenes. SRP is $19.98. Hopefully a Blu-ray Disc will follow soon.













Paramount has announced plans to release The Fugitive: Season One, Volume 2 on 26 February. This second installment of the hit David Janssen series will arrive on DVD in its original full-frame format, as well as mono sound mixes. No bonuses will be included, though – fans will have to be happy with the second fifteen episodes of this first season. SRP is $36.98.














McLeod’s Daughters: The Complete Fifth Season will be released on DVD by Koch Entertainment on 5 February. This latest installment of the hit western series will arrive on DVD in its original full-frame format and with stereo sound mixes (bonus features have yet to be confirmed). The 8-DVD set will carry an SRP of $76.98.















MPI is also planning a 26 February DVD release of The Color Honeymooners: Collection Two. This sophomore installment of the iconic Jackie Gleason series will arrive on this 3-DVD set in its original full-frame format and will contain mono sound mixes on each episode (no bonus goodies will be included). SRP is $29.99.
